In the 1980s Brian Dennehy became one of the most frequently seen supporting players in Hollywood; here, in this occasionally funny domestic comedy, he had his first shot at playing the lead. Trouble starts for Dennehy when his new car turns out to be a lemon. He takes his wife (Archer) and children on a Hawaiian vacation that turns into an ordeal. Finally Jackson snaps. Determined to live outside the system, he pulls out every phone and unscrews every light bulb in his house. He tears up the front lawn to plant a vegetable garden and digs a well in the backyard. While the kids enjoy their rustic life style, it begins to wear on his wife, and the neighbors are up in arms. The familiar plot is not especially well realized, but Dennehy and Archer manage to save it, thanks to sheer likability and what seems to be genuine affection between them. leave a comment
