A romantic comedy distinguished by the particular roadblocks writer/director Kevin Smith throws up in front of his characters: The eternal triangle is as much about friendship as sex, and the girl in question is gay. Comic-book-drawing roommates Holden (Ben Affleck) and Banky (Jason Lee) are lifelong buddies whose friendship is put to the test by romance. Cranky old man-in-training Banky, who's devoted to Holden, spends his time railing against political correctness. Holden, a smoothie with a heart, falls in love with a third comic artist, Alyssa (Joey Lauren Adams), who only wants to be friends because she's a lesbian. Like the recent LOVE JONES, plot isn't the main event here, and sexual innuendo is often a cover for the confusion of young adults making the transition from casual relationships to the search for their soulmates. Smith writes his way out of the trap of unconsummated love by having Alyssa fall in love with Holden for who he is -- gender notwithstanding -- but their relationship founders on his inability to accept her past promiscuity with partners of both sexes. The picture's strengths are the verbal riffs on love and pop culture, some so witty you can't quite believe they're coming out of the mouths of these flakes. You can almost hear Smith straining to become a serious filmmaker, but in the end he drops the ball: The subject -- the complexity of love when all the rules have changed -- proves beyond the scope of his limited vision. leave a comment
