Kruger is a Dutch painter framed for the murder of his mistress, whose body has been found in his cottage in this taut thriller. As the mystery unravels, the insightful detective, Baker, discovers that the woman was not only the mistress of the deceased Kruger but of an important
diplomat as well. Baker becomes convinced of Kruger's innocence and proves that the diplomat's jealous wife committed the crime. Baker is outstanding as the tough, rather-eccentric inspector who is determined to catch the killer. The film suffers somewhat from an overly complicated flashback
structure.
