Swing meets Strauss when MacMurray and his jazz band invade Vienna, and the whole town goes jazz mad. While the Strauss family fights this unorthodox competition, love grows between the brassy MacMurray and Leiber's darling daughter, Swarthout. The contest is basically "serious" music versus the popular kind and is climaxed by an elaborate production number featuring both forms, with neither emerging particularly well. Dances staged by LeRoy Prinz add some backbone to a sluggish production whose timing is a little off. Songs include: "The Blue Danube" (Johann Strauss), "Champagne Waltz" (Milton Drake, Ben Oakland, Con Conrad), "Could I Be in Love?" (Leo Robin, William Daly), "The "Merry-go-Round" (Ann Ronnell), "Paradise in Waltz Time" (Sam Coslow, Frederick Hollander), "When Is a Kiss Not a Kiss?" (Ralph Freed, Burton Lane). leave a comment
