This sometimes fascinating thriller purportedly deals with Red China but was filmed almost exclusively in Buckinghamshire, England. Peck, an American spy, poses as a scientist and travels to the People's Republic of China, ostensibly to learn about an enzyme that dramatically hastens growth in plants. Though the Chinese scientists welcome their distinguished colleague, the government is reluctant to share the secrets of this new scientific development. When the enzyme's inventor, Luke, says that he believes the world should share the benefits of his discovery, he is put to death.
