Despite the presence of some top-flight names, CHAINED fails to be anything more than your typical hanky-wringer of the 1930s. Kruger is a wealthy, middle-aged steamship executive. He's unhappily married to Gateson, who won't grant him a divorce to marry his mistress, Crawford. Crawford goes on a sea journey to South America and meets Gable, a wealthy Argentine rancher. There is immediate electricity but Crawford holds back her feelings in favor of her illicit relationship with Kruger. When Crawford returns to New York she learns that Kruger's wife is suing him for divorce, so she will now be free to marry him. The wedding takes place. Gable arrives in New York, still mad for Crawford. When they meet again, bells ring and Gable is determined to face up to Kruger and let him know how he and Crawford feel about each other, setting the scene for a grand confrontation. Up until now, Crawford has remained 100 percent true to her husband. The picture fizzles in the final minutes as Gable explains everything to the hapless Kruger, who is a gentleman, understands the passion of youth, and steps aside to let the lovers unite. Crawford gave this picture her all and got fine notices all round, despite a lightweight script. Gable appears bored by the whole affair and looks as if he wished he could get into another film as soon as possible. He went into another unhappy wife story, FORSAKING ALL OTHERS, almost immediately. Kruger has the best moments as the tired businessman. One cinema oddity was the presence of young Keenan Wynn as Crawford's double in the speedboat sequence. He was 18 years old and it was another eight years before he officially debuted in MGM's FOR ME AND MY GAL. leave a comment
