This modest horror film opens in 1951, as cartoonist Combs is hard at work in his basement on a horror comic book, his storyboard panels showing a monster with a satanic symbol on its chest killing and eating a young woman. The inspiration for Combs's work is the book The Curses of the Ancient Dead; and when he reads one of these curses, the drawing comes to life. Twenty-five years later, Combs's mansion has become a rooming house for art students, where newcomer Mullowney attempts to create a comic book based on Combs's old "Cellar Dweller" series, setting up work in the basement and discovering the book of curses in the process. An enjoyable although not particularly distinguished effort, CELLAR DWELLER has a number of small worthwhile moments. Director Buechler gets the most out of a somewhat-limited script, pacing the action nicely, and the special effects are adequate--but, like everything else in this film, small and limited in scale. leave a comment
