The film tells the sometimes poignant life story of rapist Caryl Chessman, who was sentenced to San Quentin's Death Row and later executed. He is seen in his teen years (played by the lead's younger brother) as a petty thief committing a string of senseless crimes, and later as a violent man arrogantly defying society's laws. The film tends to fall back on narration (with Campbell speaking the prisoner's thoughts while pacing in his cell) instead of portraying motivations through the script and visuals. Lead Campbell later went on to star in Francis Ford Coppola's DEMENTIA 13. leave a comment
