Ceddo: Review
In turn-of-the century Senegal, the local king becomes a convert to Islam and, under the influence of a Moslem adviser, disbands the little Catholic church in the village of the Ceddo. The people resist this change just as they resisted the Christian missionaries before, going to the length of kidnapping the king's daughter. Most of the film consists of meetings between different factions and groups, all conducted according to ancient tribal customs. This film was banned in director Ousmane Sembene's native Senegal not because of its dim view of that country's conversion to Islam, but because the government insists that "Ceddo" is spelled with only one "d."
