In turn-of-the century Senegal, the local king becomes a convert to Islam and, under the influence of a Moslem adviser, disbands the little Catholic church in the village of the Ceddo. The people resist this change just as they resisted the Christian missionaries before, going to the length of kidnapping the king's daughter.
