Noir cliches get a vigorous facelift in this stylish thriller about Daryl (Bokeem Woodbine), a guy who, if it weren't for bad luck, would most certainly have no luck at all. Fresh out of jail, he gets turned around and thrown right back in after wild-man buddy Trip (Damon Saleem) gets Daryl to drive him to the bank, neglecting to mention that he plans to rob it. The stint for felony bank robbery ruins Daryl's relationship with longtime girlfriend Trish (Cynda Williams), the mother of his child, and seriously narrows his employment options. Just when he feels himself sinking into a pit of despair, Daryl meets Vanessa Dietrich (also Williams), a tarot-card-reading, super-freaky kind of gal who looks so much like Trish it hurts. She gets Daryl a job working for eccentric pal Billy Grimm (Joseph Lindsey), a heroin dealer turned shady limo-fleet owner. Soon Daryl's up to his freshly polished scalp in trouble: Rasta sociopaths, undercover sting operations, an obnoxious parole officer, stolen diamonds, crooked cops and a mysterious stalker whose motives remain a complete mystery are only the highlights. Director-actor-producer Darin Scott makes his directing debut here, and his love for luscious images and secondhand crime movie tropes is evident. His flamboyant visuals defiantly cross the line between stylish and insanely stylized, but Scott's voluptuous enthusiasm is infectious. He also crafts a couple of shockingly violent scenes with considerable skill, and pulls off quite a coup de something near the end: I'm not sure I'm glad I saw the secret stalker's secret, but I definitely hadn't seen it before. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
