Dressler and Moran are best friends (don't tell anybody), but appear to the world as rival boarding-house landladies envious of each other. Moran's son and Dressler's daughter fall in love and the mothers--who have been playing the stock market on the side and winning--try to out-ritz each
other at the wedding. In the end, the lovers are united and the two old pals have joined hands again. This is considered the apex in the careers of two funny ladies whose humor often approached slapstick but was saved because it was always so endearingly human.
