1963, Movie, NR, 88 mins

This ordinary western has Taylor living the role of a well- to-do rancher who feels that good fences make good neighbors. The villains of the piece want to keep barbed wire out of Wyoming in 1883. Caulfield is the female interest, so you can imagine the surprise when she gets drilled about two-thirds into the film. Middleton and his cohorts support something called The National Cattle Trail, which calls for grazing just about anywhere. Middleton is associated with Windom, Caulfield's wimpy, alcoholic brother. Taylor enlists the aid of President Chester A. Arthur (Gates in the best characterization in the movie), who agrees to support Taylor's plan. Middleton is enraged when he thinks that Windom has joined up with Taylor. The bullet meant for Windom nails Caulfield, and all concerned realize the need for a speedy conclusion to this range war. The final battle between Middleton and Taylor is swift, and the picture fades out with truth and justice on the winning side. This was Taylor's last film for MGM after nearly thirty years. Not a fitting end for the man who costarred in CAMILLE, BATAAN, A YANK AT OXFORD, and many, many more. leave a comment
