Cattle Drive

1951, Movie, NR, 77 mins

Photographed in Death Valley, this outstanding western features young Dean Stockwell as Chester Graham, Jr., the snobbish son of a railroad tycoon who is inadvertently left behind in the sun-blistered desert when his father's train pulls away without him. Dan Mathews (Joel McCrea, perfectly cast) is an old trail boss who looks after the lad as he drives his cattle toward civilization. Oddly, this western contains not one female character, except for a picture the cattleman carries with him of his wife (actor McCrea's real-life wife, Frances Dee), who represents the ideal that waits for him at the end of the trail. Strongly reminiscent of CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS. leave a comment
