Lloyd returns to his hometown after 20 years in the hinterlands of China with his missionary father in this sound feature. He's discovered by corrupt politicians and set up as a mayoral candidate to run against their man. Lloyd unexpectedly wins in a landslide and sets about cleaning up the town while expressing himself in cryptic Chinese proverbs. The villains attempt a frame-up, but Lloyd uses his Oriental wisdom to force confessions out of them before running the lot out of town. Lloyd had been off the screen for two years before this film and it marks a departure from his usual madcap antics (it was only the second film he made with an actual script). The laughs ...
