Mike Nichols's darkly hilarious and often surreal treatment of Joseph Heller's novel was a notorious flop in its day, but it's held up rather well and is ripe for reassessment. Set on a small Italian island, circa 1944, the film follows American bombardier Captain Yossarian (Alan Arkin) as he attempts to have himself grounded by claiming he's insane but finds himself trapped in the paradox of "catch-22."
