This was the first, and among the very best, of the literate, understated horror films Val Lewton produced for RKO in the 1940s. Director Jacques Tourneur made a conscious decision not to show much in the way of a typical movie monster, and instead left it up to his audiences to imagine the worst. The result is a subtle yet terrifying study of a newly married woman (Simone Simon) who believes she's tainted by an ancient Balkan curse: If sexually arounsed, she'll transform into a panther and kill her lover.
