The Cat And The Canary

1979, Movie, PG, 90 mins

starstarstarstar
An amusing Christie-esque film with all the necessary elements of mystery--a mansion, will readings, rainy nights, and an insane killer. Lynley is the sole heir to a fortune left by a supposedly insane old codger (Hyde-White), which naturally upsets the relatives. There are a few laughs (mixed in with a few scares), most of them coming from Hyde-White's taped will in which he berates those relatives he left behind. This is the fourth version of John Willard's successful 1922 play, filmed previously in 1927, 1930 (as THE CAT CREEPS), and 1939 (as a Bob Hope comedy). Directed by artsy, soft-core Radley Metzger (aka Henry Paris), who is best known for such films as THE LICKERISH QUARTET and THE OPENING OF MISTY BEETHOVEN. leave a comment
