Matthau is a poor Cajun horse trainer attempting to bring up his three sons (Rubin, Burns, and Hershewe) all alone. His horse, Casey's Shadow, named after his youngest son, is set to run in the rich quarter-horse event at New Mexico's Ruidoso track. When the horse is injured, Matthau
nurses the horse back to health in record time. Hamilton and Smith want to buy the animal, but Webber would like it destroyed. The outcome of the race isn't much of a surprise, the narrative is slow but steady, and the action flags occasionally. All in all, however, CASEY'S SHADOW is a sincere,
good-natured, well-performed family picture.
