Matthau is a poor Cajun horse trainer attempting to bring up his three sons (Rubin, Burns, and Hershewe) all alone. His horse, Casey's Shadow, named after his youngest son, is set to run in the rich quarter-horse event at New Mexico's Ruidoso track.
