The Case Of Sergeant Grischa: Review

Morris is a Russian POW in WW I Germany. He manages to escape the compound and is hidden by Compson. After a time he tries to make his way back to Russia but is recaptured by the Germans while wearing the identity tag of a dead Russian spy. Despite evidence of his innocence, Morris is executed as a spy. Adapted from a harrowing novel by Arnold Zweig, the film went out of its way to be serious and weighty but managed to lose dramatic tension.
