Morris is a Russian POW in WW I Germany. He manages to escape the compound and is hidden by Compson. After a time he tries to make his way back to Russia but is recaptured by the Germans while wearing the identity tag of a dead Russian spy. Despite evidence of his innocence, Morris is
executed as a spy. Adapted from a harrowing novel by Arnold Zweig, the film went out of its way to be serious and weighty but managed to lose dramatic tension. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Sound.
