CARPOOL
starstarstarstar
Surely August is the cruelest month, that tail end of summer when major studios clean house and dump assorted atrocities onto a languid, unsuspecting public lured into the multiplex by the promise of air-conditioning. David Paymer stars as Daniel Miller, a harried ad exec and parent who, while fulfilling his carpool tour of duty, has his minivan full of kiddies hijacked by Franklin Laszlo (Tom Arnold), a desperate carnival owner who's just bungled a robbery. Hot on their heels are the cops, a few other assorted criminal types and a rabid meter maid (frighteningly realized by Rhea Perlman). It's the same irritating kiddie-slapstick formula that made Disney a fortune throughout the '70s, and it hasn't gotten any funnier. Indifferently directed and almost aggressively tedious, we'd call it cliched if they'd even bothered getting the cliches right. leave a comment
