An average shipboard melodrama which was Crawford's first film after winning an Oscar for his performance in Robert Rossen's ALL THE KING'S MEN (1949). The plot involves Ireland, captain of a tired oil tanker, and Crawford, the ship's engineer. The pair soon find themselves at odds over
their mutual affection for Drew (who happens to be Crawford's fiancee). Tension turns to violence when Ireland and Crawford get into a knock-down-drag-out fight in which the captain comes out on top. Climax sees a vicious storm which causes a shipboard fire giving Ireland the opportunity to save
Crawford's life.
