Wallowing in second-rate melodrama, CAREFUL, HE MIGHT HEAR YOU is, unfortunately, a half-superb film. The successful half features six-year-old Gledhill as a wide-eyed lad who lives in the depression-era home of Nevin and Whitford. The boy is really the son of Nevin's sister, who died during childbirth. Gledhill is given a nickname--"P.S."--because he was an postscript to his mother's life. The dreaded day, when a third sister (Hughes) returns from a global vacation and requests custody of Gledhill, finally arrives. An extremely wealthy and beautiful woman, Hughes calls for the boy in a chauffeur-driven limousine and showers him with presents. Nevin agrees to allow Hughes partial custody, but eventually a court battle takes place. Matters are further complicated by the arrival of Gledhill's long-absent father (Hargreaves), a drinker who takes a genuine liking to the boy but can't commit himself to bringing him up. Gledhill is the film's saving grace. A joy to watch, he prevents the film from drowning in its tangled plot and melodramatic leanings. The performers are all noteworthy, especially Hughes, but they are trapped by the script. leave a comment
