A truly ludicrous drama about l'amour fou between a convict (Tim Roth) and a prison dentist (Julia Ormond). Doctor and patient get all het up during his semiannual checkup -- it's about authority and submission, see? -- and before you know it, she's probing his bridgework and buffing his enamel in public lavatories all over town. CAPTIVES might have worked had it gone over the top a la Zalman King, but Angela Pope's direction is prosaic, reflecting her background in television. Needless to say, this 1994 British curiosity is being released Stateside in order to capitalize on the sudden stardom of its leads, both of whom are capable actors with -- let's face it -- not much in the way of erotic appeal. leave a comment
