This tale of cross-cultural love and loyalties is set in WW II Japan, where US airmen Sgt. McManus (Michael Sarrazin) and Robert (Chris Makepeace), a young lieutenant, are shot down and parachute into a remote northern village. The men are spared execution when respected elder Fukushima (Pat Morita) intercedes on their behalf, commuting their sentence from death to labor in the village. McManus cannot shake his intense hatred of the Japanese, while Robert becomes friends with Fukushima and so absorbed in village life that he falls in love with his mentor's widowed daughter-in-law, Miyoko (Mari Sato). Problems arise when a local old-timer (Seth Sakai) appears determined to make Miyoko his own bride. leave a comment
