Filmed in Germany, CAPTAIN SINDBAD is one of the finest examples of what a Saturday-matinee picture should be. This one has everything: huge production values, wit, speed, imagination, and fantastic special effects. Williams (television star from "Lost In Space" and "Zorro") is Sindbad, whose job it is to "neutralize" the villainous El Kerim (Armendariz in his penultimate role; his last was FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE) by getting into the impossible-to-get-into tower where the villain's heart is kept. (He leaves his heart in that building so that he can't be killed in combat. Yes, that's right!) In the course of inhuman events, our hero must face man-eating crocodiles, a multiheaded ogre, an invisible monster, a huge fist in a spiked glove, avalanches, man-eating fish, and more and more. And with all of that, the film is not a whit more violent than what kids see on Saturday-morning television. Byron "Bunny" Haskin does a terrific job on the usual King Brothers budget. leave a comment
