The early days of the Australian bush when it was used as a massive prison for British Empire criminals is the setting for this worthwhile drama. Aherne stars as an Irish freedom fighter who is shipped down under and made to work for evil landowner Zucco. He gets together with new-found ally and fellow prisoner McLaglen, and the pair escape bringing four other prisoners with them. The fugitives become an Australian version of Robin Hood and his Merry Men when they defend the rights of small ranchers against the land-grabbing Zucco. After many run-ins with the wicked despot's men, the gang finally bring him to justice and earn pardons for their good deeds. Outstanding cast of character actors, good action, and well-balanced comedy sequences make this a winning entertainment. The film earned an Oscar nomination for Best Interior Decoration. leave a comment
