An authentic American hero, Eddie Rickenbacker was properly lionized in this Fox film released between the German and the Japanese surrenders in 1945. By that time, the end of the war in the Pacific was a foregone conclusion and patriotism was rampant, so there couldn't have been a better time to release the movie. MacMurray is believable as the WW I ace who shot down a combined total of 26 balloons and planes. It's all told in flashback as Capt. Eddie and pals sit in a rubber raft, having just crash-landedin the Pacific, where they would spend a harrowing three weeks. It's episodic and bogs down from time to time, but it remains an accurate portrayal of a fascinating man. Rickenbacker was always a mechanical type and his early experiments are depicted, as well as his marvelous war record, his marriage and his pioneer efforts to make aviation into the force it is today. Rickenbacker went into the auto business after WW I and had a failure with the car named after him. Then, at the age of 48, he began Eastern Airlines with financing from Laurence Rockefeller. The acting is fine, and the tech credits are all professional. It's just a nice movie about a nice guy who finished first. leave a comment
