The first foray of famed horror film director Jacques Tourneur (CAT PEOPLE  and I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE ) into the western genre has fascinating results. Andrews turns in an outstanding performance as a former scout turned general store owner in the Oregon Territory of 1854.
Also in town is banker Donlevy, who has a weakness for spending his depositors' money to cover his gambling debts. Tension between the two arises when Donlevy's fiancee Hayward falls in love with Andrews. Soon Donlevy's debts get him into trouble, and he becomes involved in the murder of one of
