The first foray of famed horror film director Jacques Tourneur (CAT PEOPLE [1942] and I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE [1943]) into the western genre has fascinating results. Andrews turns in an outstanding performance as a former scout turned general store owner in the Oregon Territory of 1854. Also in town is banker Donlevy, who has a weakness for spending his depositors' money to cover his gambling debts. Tension between the two arises when Donlevy's fiancee Hayward falls in love with Andrews.
