Nick Nolte gives one of his finest performances in this somewhat mannered but absorbing adaptation of John Steinbeck's novels
Cannery Row and
Sweet Thursday. A former star pitcher who can't forget his one disastrous mistake on the mound, Nolte lives in obscurity on the Monterey waterfront
among the colorful down-and-outers who provide the film's amusing, sometimes hilarious antics. Nolte is also unable to decide how he feels about Debra Winger, the young hooker who loves him. John Huston narrates this involving, often poetic film, which starred Raquel Welch in Winger's role until
she was fired halfway through the making of the film.
