In the beginning there were Christopher Isherwood's "Berlin Stories." From them came the award-winning play that provided the basis for both I AM A CAMERA and CABARET. Despite an intelligent adaptation and cast, this version is little more than an erratically filmed stage play. The action is static and the plot developed mostly through dialogue, which takes a far lighter tone than CABARET. The comedy deals with the episodic adventures of Harvey, a poor, struggling writer, and the effervescent Harris, a nightclub chanteuse--roommates caught up in the swirl of pre-WWII Berlin. Winters is a German girl who begins to experience the anti-Semitism of the Nazi regime. leave a comment
