Along Came Jones

1945, Movie, NR, 90 mins

In his first role as producer, Cooper turns out a savory spoof of westerns, particularly the type with the strong, silent hero he himself had established. As an inept, gun-shy saddle bum, Cooper rides into town with his carping sidekick, Demarest, only to be mistaken for bad man Jarrad (Duryea). He wins the respect of the townfolk, admiration he has sought all his life, even though it is on the dark side. But the charade collapses when Cooper proves he cannot hit the side of a barn with a carefully aimed bullet, and he is almost sent to boot hill when Duryea finally shows up to challenge him. Our hero is saved by a sharpshooting damsel, Young, whom he has been unsuccessfully wooing. When she learns he is not a baddie, she takes quick action, disposes of Duryea with a well-directed (and well-deserved) bullet, and Cooper winds up in her arms. A witty, thoroughly entertaining film with snappy scenes directed by Heisler who had edited Cooper's films as early as 1934 (beginning with King Vidor's THE WEDDING NIGHT). leave a comment
