Calling Dr. Gillespie

Really only notable as the film that the erstwhile Dr. Kildare, Lew Ayres, had to stop working on because he had declared conscientious objector status in WW II. The role was rewritten, re-cast, and re-shot using foreign actor Dorn as young doctor Gerniede who was made Dutch to explain his accent. The new casting really doesn't matter because Barrymore, as usual, dominates the movie. Plot concerns a homicidal maniac, Brown, and his distraught girl friend, Reed, who call on Barrymore to cure Brown of his illness. Dorn aids the wheelchair-ridden doctor as he follows the maniac's string of murders, searching for a way to end the man's sickness. Look for Ava Gardner in a bit part. leave a comment
