In this delightful spoof of the early TV Hopalong Cassidy craze, TV promoters Mike Frye (Fred MacMurray) and Deborah Patterson (Dorothy McGuire) are handed the assignment of finding "Smoky" Callaway, a yesteryear star of B westerns who has become an overnight smash, with millions of youngsters watching his old oaters on TV. They are unable to find Callaway but do discover real-life cowboy Stretch Barnes (Howard Keel), a double for the missing actor, and induce him to impersonate Callaway. Trouble begins as success goes to Stretch's head and he becomes a thoroughly obnoxious "star." The situation worsens when the real Callaway (also played by Keel) shows up. It's a lot of fun and offers an interesting portrait of the early days of television. leave a comment
