Overblown early talkie melodrama starring Bushman as an ex-clown who has retired to become a horticulturist. The man is obsessed with his flowers and ignores his wife, a former circus widow whose marriage to Bushman was arranged. The woman has learned to love the grouchy clown but Bushman is not happy with the marriage and targets his stepson to feel his wrath. The boy gets fed up with the abuse and goes back to the circus. Soon after, Bushma saves the life of a young woman during a vicious storm. The girl is grateful and Bushman misinterprets her affection for him as love. He falls hard for the younger woman but is soon called away on a trip. In his absence the wife, who sees what is happening to her husband, sends for her son to return and distract the young woman. The scheme works and upon his return Bushman learns of the young couple's intention to marry. The old man makes a last attempt to woo the girl but he fails and ends up alone among his flowers. Given time to reflect on his actions, the former circus clown realizes his foolishness and seeks to reunite with his loving wife. The subject matter is treated sensitively by the script, but the silent film performers attempting to make the transition to sound pictures tend to overplay their roles. leave a comment
