Merman repeats her successful Broadway performance in this pleasant musical. She's a Washington hostess who is named ambassador to the tiny European nation of Lichtenburg. She falls in love with foreign minister Sanders while Princess Vera-Ellen dances with and falls for press attache O'Connor. Merman utterly dominates the picture with her boisterous performance, loosely based on the life of former Ambassador to Luxembourg Perle Mesta. Musical numbers (all by Irving Berlin) include "It's A Lovely Day Today" sung by O'Connor and Vera-Ellen (her voice dubbed by Carole Richards), "You're Just In Love," duet by Merman and O'Connor, "Marrying For Love," solo by Sanders, and "The Ocarina," performed by Vera-Ellen and a chorus. Nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Costume Design and Best Score. leave a comment
