Once again Hollywood plays fast and loose with history in this dull oater that glamorizes the life of bloody outlaw Sam Bass. The story focuses on Duff as Bass, who falls into a life of crime after killing a man in self-defense. Romance is worked into the gunplay when good girl Hart falls for the outlaw, but she loses the battle for his affections to the wicked, more colorful DeCarlo, playing Calamity Jane. In the inevitable conclusion, Duff is mortally wounded while committing his last robbery with the horrified DeCarlo looking on. (In reality, Bass was shot to death by lawmen in 1878 near Bushy Creek, Texas; he died in the arms of Texas Ranger John B. Jones, gasping his last words: "Let me go--the world is bobbing around." He never met Calamity Jane.) leave a comment
