Huppert, a Frenchwoman who leaves her husband and travels to Australia to find herself, is in a car accident and gets a sliver of glass in one eye. As a result of a sympathetic reaction, she is gradually becoming blind in the other eye. Unless the injured eye is removed, Huppert will completely lose her sight. Friends introduce her to a blind neighbor, Menzies, a thirtyish virgin who takes consolation in caring for his cacti--plants that are generally believed to thrive on neglect but actually need much care. The two inevitably fall in love, until the sudden arrival of Huppert's husband, Mignon brings confusion. Beautifully photographed by Sokol, CACTUS is not about blindness so much as it is about seeing. Besides paying great attention to the visuals and the picturesque Australian landscape, Australian director Cox also took time with his soundtrack. The sounds of the Australian outback have rarely played such a major role. Unfortunately the sounds become so obtrusive that they stand in the film's forefront rather than becoming part of the whole atmosphere. The chief fault of CACTUS lies in its sloppy and predictable script. Huppert, as always, is superb. Menzies, who has only a minimum of film experience, is also excellent. leave a comment
