Vincente Minnelli's debut as a Hollywood director was the first all-black musical since 1936, and a monument to Ethel Waters in all her glory. Though the film unfortunately perpetuates racial stereotypes, it nevertheless showcases a number of great African-American talents. Chief among them are Lena Horne and Louis Armstrong.
