BUTTERFLY KISS
starstarstarstar
Imagine THELMA & LOUISE without the star power. Season with lurid bits of FUN and HEAVENLY CREATURES, subtract the giggling girlies, and you get something like BUTTERFLY KISS. Loony Eunice (Amanda Plummer), a murderous schizophrenic decked out in tattoos and piercings, roams England's dreary motorways in search of the lover who abandoned her; pudding-plain Miriam (Saskia Reeves), a love-starved convenience store clerk, falls under her weird spell. Together they hit the road and murder everyone who gets in their way. Eunice and Miriam -- who go by the Deeply Significant nicknames Eu and Mi -- are supposed to be taken for ravaged Everywomen in rebellion against the swinish men who abuse, oppress and marginalize them. But that's as far as the thinking goes: Screenwriter Frank Cottrell Boyce and director Michael Winterbottom don't seem to have an idea between them, a deficiency Winterbottom tries to hide by cluttering up the soundtrack with love songs that ooze prepackaged longing and regret. Plummer's fearlessness is awesome -- just try to imagine another actress willing to bare so much bony flesh wrapped in clanking chains -- but her character is nevertheless a ranting bore. leave a comment
