Burns wrote this prequel to the William Goldman film and it suffers by comparison. Granted, it is no easy job to go back before the fact, but it has been done (Lillian Hellman: ANOTHER PART OF THE FOREST) and might have fared better had not Burns fallen back to his TV antecedents ("The Munsters") and plotted this film like a rank amateur. Surprisingly, Lester doesn't do his job very well either, but he had a sow's ear to begin with. It's a series of predictable BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID episodes with little glue holding them together. Small roles are well cast and several actors have advanced their careers since then, though not as a result of this film. Since it is impossible to do a sequel when your two stars have been riddled with South American bullets, someone said: "Hey, why don't we show what happened before, guys?" They should have left well enough alone. Costume designer Theiss was nominated for an Academy Award. leave a comment
