BUSTER opens in London, 1963, with a small-time thief (rock star Collins) pilfering clothing, toys for his baby daughter, and flowers for his wife (Walters). The two are deeply in love and very happily married, although Walters wishes her husband would get a real job. Instead, Collins falls in with a group of big-thinking thieves and plays a role in Britain's Great Train Robbery, in which 15 hijackers made off with 2.6 million pounds ($7.3 million back then) stolen from the London to Glasgow Royal Mail Train. The remainder of the film details the efforts of Buster to stay out of the clutches of the police, as, one-by-one, the other gang members are caught. Loosely based on the story of real-life Great Train Robber Edwards, BUSTER features strong performances from Collins (in his first movie role) and Walters (EDUCATING RITA; PERSONAL SERVICES). Unfortunately, switching gears from comedy to crime to romance to drama, BUSTER often stalls and sputters, never settling on a mood or pace. Among the songs are Oscar-winning "Two Hearts (One Mind)" (Lamont Dozier, Phil Collins) and "Groovy Kind of Love" (T. Wine, C. Bayer-Sager, performed by Collins). leave a comment
