Christmas in Australia is sort of like August in New Orleans: steamy and sweltering. Santa Claus must arrive in Bermuda shorts after several stops at the water hole for the exhausted, panting reindeer. That aside, BUSH CHRISTMAS is a joy. Freely adapted from the 1947 version (starring Australia's then only major star, Chips Rafferty), it tells the uplifting story of three dauntless kids who join with an aborigine (Manalpuy) to hunt the thieves who stole their horse. (THE BLACK STALLION sequel, which disintegrates into chaos, is oats compared to this feast for the eyes and emotions.) Nicole Kidman is a pleasure to watch, exhibiting many star qualities. There's plenty of humor amidst the adventure, and the picture has a high gloss to it that makes it appear much more expensive than it must have cost. This is one of the rare remakes that's somewhat better than the original. leave a comment
