BURNING SECRET opens in Vienna 1926 at the home of a diplomat (Richardson) and his wife (Dunaway). Due to the icy Richardson, the relationship is a loveless one, and Dunaway welcomes the opportunity to get away, taking her 12-year-old son (Eberts) to an opulent Austrian health spa where he will be treated for a severe case of asthma. At the spa, a kindly baron (Brandauer) is being treated for a wound sustained in WW I, and it isn't long before the man captivates both mother and son. Based on a short story by Stefan Zweig, BURNING SECRET was the first film directed by Andrew Birkin (brother of actress Jane), author of several scripts, including THE NAME OF THE ROSE and OMEN III. Shot on location in Czechoslovakia, the film has an impressive look and a fine performance by Brandauer, but at times is stilted and far too ponderous. leave a comment
