Lynley, a neurotic American woman living in London, is shocked to learn that her little daughter has disappeared. When she contacts the local constable with the information, he and Lynley find out that the girl never showed up at school that day. In fact, Massey, the headmistress of the school, can find no record that the girl had ever attended the school. Olivier, a wise Scotland Yard inspector trained in psychology, is assigned to the case and wonders if Lynley's "daughter" could be the product of an unstable mind. Dullea, Lynley's journalist brother can offer no proof that his sister's child exists, but insists that she must. Suspicious of Dullea's mental state as well, Olivier is about to dismiss the matter when Lynley finds a claim ticket for her daughter's doll that was sent for repair. When he is alone with Lynley, Dullea confesses that he is the little girl's kidnaper and informs her that he has become jealous of her devotion to her daughter. Before Dullea can harm Lynley and the girl, Olivier arrives on the scene and stops him. A truly compelling psychological suspense story from Otto Preminger. BUNNY LAKE's questioning about what is real and what is illusion has a parallel in Michelangelo Antonioni's 1966 film, BLOW UP, also made in England. Although Lynley and Dullea show the worst side of the American-bred hyperactive acting style, Olivier is excellent as the analytical inspector, his easy-going grace a delightful contrast to the two stars. leave a comment
