Bulldog Drummond (Howard) and his mind-bogglingly patient fiancee Phyllis (Campbell) venture to Switzerland to get married, but, with everything in place--including the bride and groom--the ceremony is interrupted by the shocking (though predictable) news that a murder has taken place. What's more, one of the guests, Sir Raymond Blantyre (Boulton), a diamond tycoon, learns that a professor (Hobbes) has come up with a formula for a synthetic gem that will throw the international diamond market into turmoil. The nuptials have to wait while Drummond and Scotland Yard chief Neilson (Barrymore) work at cross purposes to clean up this mess. Barrymore, who was so memorable as Arthur Conan Doyle's famous sleuth in the silent version of SHERLOCK HOLMES, gives the role of Colonel Nielson some punch here, though in his other outings in the Paramount series he made the role of Drummond's nemesis/colleague much more his own. This was Louise Campbell's last bow as Phyllis, as Heather Angel replaced her in the series' next installment, BULLDOG DRUMMOND IN AFRICA. leave a comment
