Colman repeats his 1929 success in the first film he made after refusing to work for Samuel Goldwyn ever again. Fast-moving, smartly produced, laugh-studded melodrama is as incredible as it is engrossing. Drummond tries to convince Scotland Yard of the existence of a kidnapping ring in London, but every time he discovers a witness to prove the point, the witness mysteriously disappears. Colman was delighted to repeat his Drummond role because the improvement in sound and other technical refinements made it possible to portray the character with more polish and bite than the primitive 1929 version had permitted, even though he had received an Academy Award nomination for the earlier performance. Charles Butterworth's portrayal as Drummond's sidekick Algy was also a major factor in the film's success. This movie never lags and has all the plausibility of a well-written mystery novel read in the middle of the night. leave a comment
