The comic duo of Abbott and Costello had their first big success with this enjoyable Army comedy, which became one of the top grossing films of 1941. Slicker (Abbott) and Herbie (Costello) accidentally wander into an Army recruitment office and, before they know it, are enlisted in the US Army. Naturally, they wreak havoc in boot camp and create a variety of headaches for their superiors. In the meantime, recent draftees Randolph Parker III (Lee Bowman) and Bob Martin (Alan Curtis) vie for the affections of pretty camp hostess Judy Gray (Jane Frazee). Adding to the appeal of BUCK PRIVATES is the appearance of The Andrews Sisters, who deliver a number of tunes, including the Oscar-nominated "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy from Company B," (Hugh Prince, Don Raye), "Bounce Me Brother with a Solid Four," and "I'll Be with You in Apple Blossom Time." The film was also nominated for Best Scoring of a Musical Picture. Abbott and Costello reteamed in 1947 for a sequel, BUCK PRIVATES COME HOME. leave a comment
