THE BUCCANEER is a lackluster remake of the 1938 Cecil B. De Mille film of the same name, this time starring Yul Brynner (with a full head of hair) as the pirate Jean Lafitte, who comes to the aid of General Andrew Jackson (Charlton Heston) when the British attack New Orleans during the War of 1812. In the process, Lafitte falls toupee-over-heels in love with Annette Claiborne (Inger Stevens), the daughter of William Claiborne, first governor of Louisiana. Brynner, dashing and powerful as the pirate Lafitte, plays his character with a fair amount of historical accuracy--not as a wild swashbuckler but as a debonair patriot who staunchly denied all charges of piracy. This film was Anthony Quinn's first and only directing job; in a prime example of nepotism, Quinn was handed the reins of the $6 million epic when his then father-in-law, De Mille, became ill. The specter of the great epic director is very much present in the incredibly gaudy costumes (which earned designers Head, Jester and Jensen Academy Award nominations), sets, and trappings, as well as in the editing process, which De Mille supervised. leave a comment
