You may be tempted to ask what possessed horror maven George Romero to concoct this abstract fable, which bypassed its planned theatrical release and went straight to video. Overlooked by everyone he meets, Henry Creedlow (Jason Flemyng), an executive at "Bruiser" magazine, wakes up one morning and finds his face has become a blank. Within a short time, Henry will learn that he's been cuckolded by his greedy wife, Janine (Nina Garbiras), and betrayed by her lover, Milo Styles (Peter Stormare), who happens to be Henry's boss. In addition, he discovers that his best friend/accountant, Jimmy Larson (Andrew Tarbet), has handled his holdings by cleaning him out. Forever fantasizing about revenge, faceless Henry now finds himself in a unique position to get even. The first victim of his rage is his dishonest housekeeper. Empowered by "justifiable" homicide, Henry surprises his unfaithful wife at the "Bruiser offices;" he hangs her and sets about directing police suspicion in Milo's direction. Next, it's payback time for Jimmy at a racquetball court. While the cops reach a dead end in pursuing the anonymous terminator, Henry maintains contact with Milo's wife, Rosemary (Leslie Hope), whom he senses is a kindred spirit. When Milo throws a masked ball to promote his publication, Henry crashes the party as the detectives scour the crowd for the killer. Before he's apprehended, Henry prepares to fry Milo with an electrifying send-off. If Henry escapes punishment, what sort of future awaits him? A facile expose of our faceless consumer society, Romero's first feature in nearly a decade is fatally undermined by the fact that, unlike Stormare's hammy emoting terrifyingly, Creedlow's blank visage (which resembles a smiley face from a Wal-Mart) isn't very scary. Never known for his light touch, Romero neglects the material's black comedy element and succumbs to a muddled message about the destructive impersonality inherent in the corporate mentality. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
